The reason JUNCTION could last for some years in Korea is probably because of the various participants who participate for 3 days enthusiastically. In order to get some information about the upcoming JUNCTION ASIA 2022, we prepared an interview with participants who have participated in JunctionX Seoul since 2019. Please have fun.

Q. How did you find out about JUNCTION? And I'm curious as to why you applied!
Yeonhyuk Kim(JunctionX Seoul 21 Participant): One of my seniors in university was a JunctionX Seoul participant in 2020, and he told me that he would go again. JUNCTION is well-known for its global scale, which means that I can meet, communicate and cooperate with foreigners to manage hackathon tasks successfully. And most importantly, it looks so fun!
Jongwon Park(JunctionX Seoul 20 Participant): I was looking for an internship to get experience in cooperating with others., and the JUNCTION hackathon appeared via Facebook ads. It was interesting that a global hackathon is going to be held in Korea. When I had to fill out the application form in English, I realized that JUNCTION is literally a global hackathon.
Q. What was the main difference between the JUNCTION hackathon with others?
Yeonhyuk: JunctionX Seoul is huge and the track partners are also leading companies such as AWS Game Tech and Microsoft, which made me trusted. Also, it was refreshing that the participants were able to choose the track challenges presented by these various companies. In other hackathons, participants don’t have the freedom to choose the challenges, since there is only one challenge.
Jiyoung Lee(JunctionX Seoul 19, 20, 21 Participant): It’s really unique that I can choose specific options from the track partner's multiple challenges. It made me feel more creative than working on given agenda. Furthermore, track partners offer mentoring sessions.
Q. What was the most difficult moment during the hackathon? I'm also curious about how you overcame that situation.
Jiyoung: The process of coordinating opinions in the team was not easy. I participated 3 times, and at the first time I participated, even though I formed my team with close friends, the process of making a agreed decision was quite difficult. For example, as a hackathon theme, we had to even choosing a track challenge from 4 challenges, and opinions started to differ from this.
Bong-oh Moon(JunctionX Seoul 20 Participant): It was not easy to co-working with foreigners from all over the world only in online communication, because of the Covid-19 situation. In my team, there were a Designer from Kazakhstan, a student from Africa, and a German Software engineer.
Q. What do you think is the most important thing on participating in the hackathon?
Yeonhyuk: Ability to set directions by refining various opinions to a feasible level.
Jiyoung: Establishing clear positions and rules for each team member.
Jongwon: The ability to coordinate for the team's goal.
Bong-oh: Scheduling skills.
Q. After participating in the JUNCTION hackathon, is there anything that has changed for you?
Jiyoung: I started to develop my own product! It’s always an inspiring experience to meet new people and discuss problems and solutions.
Bong-oh: It was an opportunity to learn a global sense. In my case, as a Korean, I think within the Korean culture and mindset in the process of developing ideas. Participating in the hackathon gave me a perspective to think on a global scale and understand problems. Being able to look at the same problem differently and come up with a different solution was very encouraging.
Q. Lastly, what if “JUNCTION is [ ]” in one line?
Yeonhyuk: JUNCTION is a “Place to Meet Relationships” for me.
Jiyoung: JUNCTION is “New Travel Destination” for me.
Jongwon: JUNCTION is “Result of My Twenty’s” for me.
Bong-oh: JUNCTION is a “Turning Point” for me.

참가자들로부터 듣는 생생한 이야기: 참가자 인터뷰
JUNCTION의 해커톤이 국내에서 수년 동안 지속될 수 있었던 건, 열정적으로 행사를 준비하는 크루뿐만 아니라, 최종 행사에 참가해 자리를 빛내주는 다양한 참가자들 때문이 아닐까 합니다. 다가오는 JUNCTION ASIA 2022 해커톤에 대한 정보를 얻을 수 있게 19년도 부터 JuncxionX Seoul에 참가한 참가자 인터뷰를 준비해봤습니다. 재밌게 봐주세요. |
Q. JUNCTION을 어떻게 알게 됐나요? 그리고 지원하신 계기가 궁금해요!
김연혁(JunctionX Seoul 21 참가자): 대학 생활을 같이하던 선배 중 한 분이 20년도 JunctionX Seoul 참가자인데, 그분이 21년에도 또 나간다는 이야기를 해주셔서 행사에 대해서 알게 됐어요. 저는 전에 다른 해커톤을 참가했다가 아쉬운 경험이 있어서 이런 부분을 회복하고 싶었고 또 JunctionX Seoul은 큰 규모로 개최되는 글로벌 해커톤인만큼 새롭고 재미있는 경험을 해볼 수 있겠다고 생각해 지원했습니다.
박종원(JunctionX Seoul 20 참가자): 군대 전에 경험을 쌓고 싶어서 인턴을 찾던 중, JUNCTION 해커톤이 광고로 떴어요. 글로벌 해커톤인데 한국에서 진행되는 것이 흥미로웠고, 지원서를 영문으로 작성해야 해서 정말 글로벌한 해커톤이라 생각했어요.
Q. 과거 해커톤 참가 경험에 빗대어 JUNCTION 해커톤이 차별화되는 점이 있다고 느낀 부분은?
연혁: JunctionX Seoul은 규모도 크고 트랙 파트너도 AWS Game Tech 이나 마이크로소프트 같은 큰 회사들이라 신뢰가 갔어요. 또 이런 여러 회사가 제시하는 주제를 참가자가 직접 선택해 문제를 해결한다는 점도 신선했어요. 보통 주제는 정해져 있고 참가자가 선택할 수 없거든요.
지영(JunctionX Seoul 19, 20, 21 참가자): JUNCTION 해커톤은 기업들이 직접 트랙 챌린지를 내고 직접 멘토링을 진행해준다는 점이 가장 좋았습니다. 또 행사가 다양하게 구성되어 있어서도 좋았어요. 특히 요가를 한다거나 숙소 지원을 해주는 등다른 팀과 교류할 기회가 있어서 정말 좋았습니다.
Q. 해커톤 과정에서 가장 힘들었던 순간은 언제인가요? 그 상황을 어떻게 극복했는지도 궁금해요.
지영: 팀 내부에서 의견을 조정하는 과정이 쉽지 않았습니다. 저는 3번 참가했는데 처음 참가했을 때는 친한 친구들과 참가했음에도 불구하고, 공통된 의사결정을 내리는 과정이 꽤 힘들더라고요. 예를 들면 해커톤 주제로 특정 기업의 과제를 정해야 하는데 이것부터 의견이 다르기 시작했고요.
봉오: 비대면으로 진행되는 동시에 외국인 참가자들이 섞여 있으니까 꽤 힘든 부분이 있었는데요. 제가 속한 팀은 카자흐스탄 출신 디자이너, 아프리카 출신 유학생, 독일 개발자, 그리고 저를 포함한 한국인 개발자까지 정말 글로벌한 구성이라 기본적으로 의사소통이 힘들었어요.
Q. 해커톤에 직접 참가해 보니, 가장 중요한 것이 무엇이라고 생각하나요?
연혁: 다양한 의견을 구현 가능한 수준으로 다듬어 방향을 설정하는 능력
지영: 팀원들끼리 각자의 명확한 포지션과 룰을 정하는 것
종원: 팀원의 의견을 조율해 줄 수 있는 사람
봉오: 일정관리 능력.
Q. JUNCTION 해커톤에 참여한 뒤, 내게 바뀐 점이 있다면?
지영: 21년도 JunctionX Seoul을 참가한 이후 해당 프로젝트를 조금씩 개발하고 있어요! 해커톤을 함께 참가한 사람들과 친해지고 서로 정보를 교류하기도 하는 등 생산적인 관계가 되었습니다. 디자이너 입장에선 제로 베이스부터 런칭까지, 제품 생산 주기의 모든 과정을 짧은 시간 내에 모두 경험해보기 힘들기에, 해커톤이 특히 더 의미가 있었어요.
봉오: 글로벌 감각을 익히는 계기가 됐어요. 저 같은 경우에 한국 사람이다 보니 아이디어를 개발하는 과정에서 한국 문화와 사고 방식 내에서 생각하게 되는데, 해커톤을 참가하면서 글로벌 스케일로 사고하고 문제를 이해하는 관점을 얻을 수 있었어요. 같은 문제를 다르게 바라보고 다른 해결책을 낼 수 있다는 부분 자체가 매우 고무적이었고요.
Q. 마지막으로 "JUNCTION은 [ ]다"라고 한 줄로 정리한다면?
연혁: “인연을 만날 수 있는 장”이다.
지영: “새로운 여행지”이다.
종원: “20대의 결과물”이다.
봉오: “변곡점”이다.
